Once when asked what her favorite story or book was when she was little, the renowned movie critic Pauline Kael replied, “I loved the Oz books. I loved all the characters because they didn’t have any message for us—they just were there for our pleasure.” I think she was onto something. These are adventure stories, plain and simple.
